A former CEO of mattress manufacturer Latex International was sentenced earlier this month to prison for embezzling about $1.7 million in what prosecutors said was a scheme to pay for “an absurdly extravagant lifestyle.”
Kevin Coleman of Waseca, Minn., was sentenced in federal court in Bridgeport to 70 months in prison. Coleman pleaded guilty to single counts of wire fraud and tax evasion in February.
The U.S. District Judge also ordered Coleman to pay more than $1.7 million in restitution to the company, as well as $1.3 million in back taxes, penalties and interest.
While this is a huge case, involving a large corporation and its CEO, in Arizona embezzlement charges can range from misusing corporate credit cards and forging checks to committing employee theft and making fraudulent payments to vendors. The penalties in an embezzlement case are linked to the amount of money taken and therefore, the potential penalties can be disastrous.
