Big-Time Phoenix Events Bring Out the DUI Patrols

|

Local police agencies in the Phoenix area have boosted their DUI patrols in light of the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and the Waste Management Phoenix Open festivities that happen around this time every year. Both events expect to have thousands of visitors each day they are open with crowds made up of both Phoenicians and out-of-towners.

Barrett-Jackson is the biggest in the country with some participants watching via live feed. The auction draws a large crowd and includes many different sideshows and entertainment as well.

As Barrett-Jackson came to a close on Sunday, the Waste Management Phoenix Open started ramping up. This year the Phoenix Open runs from February 1st through the 7th and is one of the most heavily attended golf events in the country. Each day, as the golfing comes to an end, the entertainment and celebration begins with parties lasting well into the evening hours.

Arizona law enforcement is ready to crack down on DUI’s that tend to take a spike when big events like these come to town. DUI patrols will include officers from Scottsdale, Chandler, Phoenix, Gilbert and Tempe. In addition to these, both the Department of Public Safety and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will be involved as well.

During the Phoenix Open, some police officers will be involved in the “Know Your Limit” program that will kick off at the end of each day. This program involves officers offering to provide breathalyzer tests to give them an idea of how intoxicated they are and what the potential penalty would be should they decide to get behind the wheel. It’s a strategy that several local law enforcement agencies have used in the past to successfully deter people from driving drunk.

If you plan on attending either of these events, be prepared for heavy patrolling from local police. The best strategy is to have a designated driver or to call a cab for a ride home if you’ve been drinking at these events.

As always, we strongly suggest that you become familiar with your rights when it comes to being pulled over and tested for DUI. Before you head out to the Barrett Jackson auction or the Phoenix Open, spend a few minutes reviewing our “Know Your Rights” email campaign so you have a better understanding of what to do if you are pulled over for suspected DUI.
