Summer is right around the corner with longer days and warmer nights but that doesn’t mean you should become too relaxed with your teenager’s curfew times.
What is the curfew?
Although there is no state law in Arizona requiring a curfew, many of the cities in the Greater Phoenix area – including Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Tempe – have curfews that define when people who are under the age of 18 may be out on city streets without parental supervision. Currently the law in these cities states that minors under 16 years of age cannot be out unsupervised between 10 pm and 5 am the next morning. Teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age cannot be out unsupervised between 12 midnight and 5 am the next morning.
What are the punishments for breaking curfew?
The punishments range from fines and community service to court-required educational programs and the opening of a juvenile record. Parents of those children are also put on notice that it is unlawful for a parent of a minor to knowingly permit, or by insufficient control, allow a minor to violate curfew. Although curfews are very unpopular with teenagers you should still discuss the importance of said laws and make sure your child understands that the law’s intent is to protect your child.
